History

Our History

The history of Right Turn of Maryland dates back to Massachusetts circa 1983. The Chief Psychiatrist at Mount Pleasant Hospital, Dr. Steven Valle, recognized the need for programming for alcoholics in the state’s correctional system.

Dr. Valle set out to design a program for multiple DUI offenders based on the observation that when offenders were not drinking or using, they were not committing crimes, and they were ill fit for the general prison population. Dr. Valle’s program gained success, boasting the lowest recidivism rates in Massachusetts, and became a sought-after model for rehabilitating offenders in the state’s legal system.

When Charlie Powell learned about Right Turn of Massachusetts, he contacted Dr. Valle to bring the program to Baltimore. Charlie shared Dr. Valle’s passion for helping offenders make positive changes in their lives through specialized treatment programs geared towards multiple DUI offenders.

Charlie replicated Dr. Powell’s treatment model to better meet the needs of alcoholics and DUI offenders. Like Dr. Powell, Charlie understood that detoxification programs alone did not work, because offenders were released before addressing the underlying problems contributing to their alcohol and drug abuse problems. Charlie further recognized that failure help these people address these issues greatly increased their chances for relapse. Charlie dedicated himself to creating the Right Turn program of Maryland to provide alcoholics and addicts the best chance for staying clean and sober by providing treatment and the long-term support they needed to recover. Under Charlie’s leadership, Right Turn of Maryland provided treatment for more than 50,000 clients.

In 2013, Daniel Brannon assumed ownership of Right Turn of Maryland and rebranded the company under the new name Right Turn-IMPACT. Initially, Danny relocated the facility to Park Heights Avenue, just below the city line near Pikesville. Today, Right Turn Impact is located in Eldersburg, MD.

In 2023, Ben Cramer was officially named Managing Partner of Right Turn Impact. Today, Right Turn-IMPACT has significantly expanded its services to include alcohol and drug assessments, ambulatory detox, DUI education, counseling, support groups, the jail alternative Weekend Intervention Program (WIP), PHP, IOP, and OP. Right Turn Impact programming is designed to achieve the program’s goals of providing evidenced based treatment to reduce recidivism rates, increase public safety and help to save and transform people’s lives.
